In the bustling hallways of Hart High School, where dreams take shape and futures are forged, a senior named Melany Pena stands as a testament to the transformative power of the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley. The 2024 Youth of the Year was chosen by a panel of volunteer community judges for her ability to share her Club experience through spoken and written word, her high standard of ethics, and her leadership at the Club.

“I chose Melany as Youth of the Year because she has all the qualities we look for to represent the Boys & Girls Clubs of America,” shares Governing Board Member, Nola Aronson.

Melany’s journey began with a turbulent backdrop – shuffled between households, raised by young parents navigating life’s complexities. Recognizing the gaps in her fundamental human needs, Melany’s mother made a pivotal decision five years ago. She enrolled Melany in the Boys & Girls Club, hoping to provide the love, stability, and supportive foundation essential for personal growth.

Fast forward to today, and Melany is a confident senior with a quirky sense of humor and a profound love for animals. The Boys & Girls Club became the catalyst for her evolution, offering comfort, leadership opportunities, and a chance to explore her passions.

As a participant in the Leaders in Training program, Melany honed her leadership skills, eventually becoming the President. The club’s career workshop guided her towards a three-year dedication to the Animal Science College Career Readiness Course in high school, shaping her path towards a future in Veterinary medicine.

Melany’s involvement in the Keystone Club, where she currently serves as President, showcases her commitment to community service. Events like the “River Rally,” where she led peers in cleaning up the city’s river, and the toy car project for kids with disabilities, reflect her passion for the environment and making a positive impact.

Beyond the projects and events, Melany found more than camaraderie; she found a lifelong friend in Alyna. The supportive staff at the Boys & Girls Club played a crucial role in Melany’s blossoming, enriching her life and transforming relationships with her mom, family, and friends.

Melany’s story is a testament to the profound impact of the Boys & Girls Club, shaping lives, fostering leadership, and building lasting connections. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Melany for sharing her incredible journey with us.
