Hi, I am Adriana. I’m 15 and a Boys & Girls Club member. In June, I went to Leaders in Training Summer Camp in Big Bear. I was excited to get to go. It was my third summer attending. At the beginning of camp, I felt a tinge of nervousness because my old friends wouldn’t be there. But as the week went by I made new friends and came out of my shell. By the end, I had made deep connections and felt a sense of confidence. The camp helped me overcome my shyness and empowered me to take on new challenges.

One highlight was conquering the high ropes course. When I was climbing up I had a mix of adrenaline and fear. When I came down I felt a sense of accomplishment and relief washed over me. Facing my fears head-on was a powerful experience, and I realized its good to come out of our comfort zones.

Throughout camp, I formed strong bonds with the other teens. We couldn’t have electronics so we connected more. We were divided into “family groups” that became our support systems. Together, we pushed each other to step out of our comfort zones and celebrated achievements. Our family group excelled in various team challenges, including relay races and canoeing. We selected activities based on our individual strengths, and I was nominated for the basketball challenge. Against all odds, I emerged victorious and received an award for my determination. Overcoming my initial fear and doubts made the victory even better.

Some other memorable moments were at the pool when my friends playfully carried me dropped me into the pool, getting into a water balloon fight, and doing a polar plunge in the lake at 5am! Dance night was a lot of fun. Our Teen Director, Ish, was our DJ. We were encouraged to make song requests. We hyped each other up and had a lot of fun.I discovered a passion for water sports during the camp, particularly tubing and canoeing. Although I was initially apprehensive, I really liked the rush of adrenaline and the thrill of riding the waves.

One of the most meaningful things of camp was the designated “talking time.” In these group sessions, we opened up to one another, sharing our dreams, fears, and challenges. It created a safe space and we realized that everyone carries their own burdens. I made really good friends at “talking time” and we are staying in touch.

Before leaving camp, we participated in a tradition known as the “Pine Cone Dedication.” Holding a pine cone, I dedicated it to Daylyn, showing my gratitude for her unwavering friendship and support throughout the years. Also, I dedicated a pine cone to Ish, for his role in encouraging me to break out of my shell and embrace new challenges. His belief in my abilities helped me find my confidence, and I am grateful for his guidance.

Leaving the camp, I had a new sense of gratitude and accomplishment in my heart. The Leaders in Training Summer Camp gave me an invaluable platform to grow as a leader, forge lasting connections, and discover the power within myself. I look forward to returning next year, ready to make even more friends, and continue my journey towards becoming a strong and compassionate leader.
